英文
He was a Korean, after all, and no matter how appealing his personality, unfortunately he belonged to a cunninng and wily tribe.
There were many Japanese who were fair-minded and principled, but around foreigners they tended to be guarded.
The smart ones, especially, you have to watch out for those -- Koreans are natural troublemakers.
After living in japan for over a decade, Yoseb had heard it all.
「当時の韓国人に対する偏見はこのようだった」ということを淡々と書いている。
他の箇所でも「同じ韓国人同士でも実際に素行の悪い人間もいる」といったことも書かれている。
こういった記載が、冷静に公平に書かれているように思う。この本の貴重なところだと思う。
The police didn't know he was as Korean, because Yoseb's manner and dress wouldn't have given him away.
「ヨセブの振る舞いや格好が、彼の正体を隠しおおせていたからだ。」といった訳になると思うが、
それが「 not give him away 」となるのは、ちょっと慣れないとスッと入ってこないな。
この1文では完結せず、「彼は韓国人で、日本人のように振る舞っていた」という前提がないと成り立たないのも、直感的に感じられない理由のひとつか。
She would have uprooted herself to have seen the world with him, and now she was seeing it without him.
Hansu から話には聞いていた大阪に来ているわけだが、
「Hansu と故郷を捨てて来た」ではなく
「彼なしで (Isak と) 来ている」ということを言っている感じか。
They owned a six-mat house with three rooms for just the two of them,
which was unheard-of in this crowded Korean enclave where ten could sleep in a two-mat room

I gave food to the neighbors when I first got here, and soon they were asking us every day,
and I was giving away our dinners, and they didn't understand when I had to keep back some food for your brother's lunch the next day;
then one day, they broke into our house and took our last bag of potatoes.
Isak が人に親切なので Yoseb と Kyunghee が 猪飼野で住む注意点を説明しているところ。
周りを悪人と否定する訳でもないが、警戒はするべしと、リアルなエピソードに思えた。
